The Fairfield Prep Rugby team concluded its 2023 season with a multitude of firsts:  first Gonzaga Rugby Classic Varsity Division Championship, first Division 1 State Championship and first time cracking the Goff Rugby Report top ten list of best High School Rugby Programs in the nation.
 
Prep's Rugby program has existed since 1981, the oldest High School rugby program in the state of Connecticut.  With perennial rival Greenwich coming on the scene in 1983, the two schools battled for decades with one another.  However, while Prep has competed valiantly in the state of Connecticut over the past five years, the program has struggled to match national powerhouses such as Greenwich, Staples, and Xavier High School of Manhattan.  
 
Beginning after a particularly difficult 2021 regular season for the program, the team entered into a rebuilding phase.  The 2022 squad elevated the work ethic and desire all three competitive teams (Division 1, Division II and Junior Varsity), while focusing on a commitment to the individual development and needs of each player.
 
That hard work and determination that had its foundation in 2022 came to fruition in 2023, as Fairfield Prep defeated many nationally ranked competitors.  Boston College High School (Single School 43), Loudoun Rugby Club (Club 38), Staples High School (Single School 20), and Greenwich High School in the State Championship (Single School 5). 
 
When the dust had cleared on the 2023 season Goff Rugby Report recognized Fairfield Prep as the number 8 team in the United States of America, noting with a bit of foreshadowing that the group hopes to see the young team continue to compete at a high level of competition in 2024 to solidify their spot in the national conversation.  It is fruitful to recognize that Fairfield Prep joins four other Jesuit schools in the top ten: Gonzaga High School (1), Jesuit Sacramento (3), Xavier High School NYC (5), and St. Ignatius Cleveland (6), proving that High School Rugby is best at Jesuit Schools!  Goff Rugby Report can be assured that Prep will play anybody, at anytime and looks forward to testing their mettle in the upcoming seasons, earning the right to stay in that very talented group of programs throughout the United States… and even to continue to elevate the program further!
